On the afternoon of Saturday 19th January 4 Days presents performance as ‘Works in Progress’. Mikhail Karikis was one of the artists involved.
Predominantly from artists working in a solo format ‘works in progress’ is a chance for audiences to experience live ideas in an intimate gallery or studio setting, work informed by visual art, live art, theatrical, choreographic and musical strategies which despite being performed already in previous contexts is still considered ‘in progress’ or ‘continuing’, ‘unfinished’ or ‘in flux’ and an ongoing component of their current practice.
In ‘The Highflyer’, Karikis draws inspiration from political modes of speech and observes the disturbing contradictions in prevailing neoliberal models of masculinity. The work raises questions about speech and authority, jargon and bluffing; and subverts the performance of ‘maleness’ by disturbing the fine balance between machismo and masochism, and exposing the faultline between cruelty, aspiration and failure. Karikis brings this performance to Arnolfini, exploring his thematic interests in vocal acts practiced in various contexts and combining it with pre-recorded sounds, video, vocals, actions and props.
